Recycling things in Pittsburgh

The City of Pittsburgh has a biweekly pick up for recycled goods in the city. This occurs every other week on your regular garbage day and is easy to identify due to all the blue plastic bags on the street. Details of this program can be found on the Public Works web site for recycling in Pittsburgh. Items that can be left street side in the same plastic bag are:

  1. Plastic (1,2,3,4,5)
  2. Glass
  3. Metal Containers (including aerosol cans)
  4. Newspaper
  5. Magazines, Catalogs and Paperboard
  6. White Office Paper
  7. Junk Mail
  8. Hardcover Books and Phone Books
The city also will take corrugated cardboard, which needs to be flattened and then tied or bundled in boxes.

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh maintains a nice web site of resources for recycling. This has links for recycling of many other things in the Pittsburgh area.

Finally, the Construction Junction is a great resource for recycling. They provide a drop-off point for all the items which the city will pick up, but are also a place to take scrap metal, freon and non-freon appliances, Ewaste and building building material from renovation projects.
